Wayang is a traditional form of puppet theatre from Indonesia. For about ten centuries, it flourished at royal courts in Java and Bali as well as in rural areas. There are two main types. Wayang kulit uses flat leather puppets. Their shadows appear on a screen that is lit from behind. Wayang golek, on the other hand, uses three-dimensional wooden puppets.

The central figure in every performance is the dalang, or master puppeteer. The dalang moves the puppets with thin sticks and gives a voice to each character. He or she must also memorize a large number of stories. Meanwhile, musicians play the gamelan, which uses bronze instruments and drums. In 2003, UNESCO proclaimed wayang a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. It was then inscribed on the Representative List in 2008.

Teks 3

Subak is a traditional irrigation system in Bali. Its roots go back to the 9th century. Farmers in a subak share water through a network of canals and weirs. Rather than working alone, they manage the water together as a cooperative.

Water temples sit at the heart of this system. Through these temples, farmers coordinate how water is shared among their rice fields. The system reflects a philosophy called Tri Hita Karana. This idea brings together the realm of the spirit, the human world, and nature. In 2012, UNESCO inscribed the Cultural Landscape of Bali Province, which includes the subak system, on the World Heritage List. The site covers about 19,500 hectares.
